# DOES CAR INSURANCE COVER HAIL DAMAGE IN ARIZONA?

Quick Answer

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage. Hail damage to your own car is a comprehensive claim: your insurer pays the repair minus your comprehensive deductible. Liability-only policies, the minimum Arizona requires, don’t cover hail damage to your own car, because liability only pays for damage you cause to others. Most financed and leased cars are required to carry comprehensive, so check your declarations page. For the October 20–21, 2026 Phoenix storms, the date of loss is October 20 for the East Valley storm and October 21 for north Phoenix and Glendale.

The Longer Answer

## READ ONE LINE ON YOUR DECLARATIONS PAGE

Your declarations page lists each coverage you carry and its deductible. Look for “comprehensive,” sometimes called “other than collision.” If it’s there with a deductible next to it, hail is covered. If you only see bodily injury and property damage liability, the policy pays for damage you cause to other people, not storm damage to your own car.

Glass. Hail that cracks a windshield, sunroof or window is usually handled under comprehensive too. Some Arizona policies carry separate glass coverage with its own deductible, sometimes zero. If yours does, the glass may be handled differently from the dents. Your declarations page will show it.

The claim window. Policies require you to report a loss promptly, and many insurers hold hail claims to a filing window commonly around a year from the date of loss, sometimes less. Don’t wait on it. Dents found weeks later still belong to the storm that made them, but the sooner the claim is opened, the cleaner it goes.

Two storms, two dates. The October 20 storm hit Chandler, Gilbert and Mesa between 10:05 and 10:25 PM. The October 21 storm hit north Phoenix, Glendale and Peoria between 3:25 and 4:05 PM. Use the date that matches where the car was. Our [storm log](https://dgcollision.com/hail-storms/october-20-21-2026-phoenix-hail/) lists every NWS report for both days.

If you’re liability-only. There’s no insurer to bill, so the question becomes what the repair costs in cash. Paintless dent repair at $75–$200 per dent keeps small jobs affordable. That covers dents up to about half-dollar size; larger ones are priced after inspection. A written dent count tells you what you’re facing.

Who does the repair. Arizona law (A.R.S. § 20-468) lets you choose any repair shop. For qualifying claims from these storms, DG Collision Center covers your deductible up to $2,000, depending on the damage.

## ASKED ALONGSIDE THIS ONE

**Q: Is hail damage collision or comprehensive?**

A: Comprehensive. Collision covers your car hitting something; hail, theft, fire and falling objects fall under comprehensive.

**Q: Does liability-only insurance cover hail?**

A: No. Liability pays for damage you cause to other people and their property. Hail damage to your own car needs comprehensive coverage.

**Q: I found the dents days later. Can I still file?**

A: Yes. Report it promptly and use the storm date as the date of loss. Many insurers hold hail claims to a filing window commonly around a year, sometimes less, so don’t sit on it.

**Q: Will the insurance check cover the whole repair?**

A: The insurer pays the covered repair cost minus your deductible. If the shop finds more damage once panels come apart, it sends a supplement with photos and the insurer reviews it.
