# HAIL CLAIM DENIED IN ARIZONA?

Quick Answer

Get the denial in writing and read the reason. Arizona’s claim rule, A.A.C. R20-6-801(G)(1), requires a denial to be given in writing, and if it rests on a specific policy provision, condition or exclusion, the denial has to refer to it. Some reasons can’t be fixed, like having liability-only coverage. Others often can: a wrong date of loss, damage blamed on an earlier storm, or an estimate that came in under your deductible because dents were missed. Send your insurer the correction with photos, a written dent count and the storm record, and ask for another review. If you hit a wall, you can complain to the Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions.

## COMMON REASONS, AND WHAT TO DO

| The reason | Can it change? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No comprehensive coverage | Usually not | Check your declarations page. Liability-only doesn’t cover your own car. A cash repair may be the option. |
| Under your deductible | Often, if dents were missed | This usually means nothing to pay, not a true denial. A count under PDR lights may raise the number. |
| Wrong date of loss | Often | Hail fell October 20, 2026 in the East Valley and October 21 in north Phoenix and Glendale. Correct the date in writing. |
| “Prior damage” | Sometimes | Send older photos, a past inspection or a purchase record that shows the car before the storm. |
| Filed too late | Depends on the policy | Many policies set a window of about a year, sometimes less. Ask which provision applies. |

## HOW TO ASK FOR ANOTHER LOOK

1. Get the letter. If you were told no by phone, ask for it in writing. The written denial tells you exactly what you’re answering.

2. Gather the proof. Dated photos, the location of the car during the storm, and the verified reports on our [Phoenix storm log](https://dgcollision.com/hail-storms/october-20-21-2026-phoenix-hail/), which lists report times, places and stone sizes. A written dent count shows what the hail actually did.

3. Ask for a review. Write to your adjuster or their supervisor, quote the reason given, and attach what answers it. You open the claim and make the request; we provide the dent count, photos and estimate.

4. Go outside the insurer if needed. The Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions takes complaints at [azdfi.gov](https://azdfi.gov/consumers/help-problem/filing-complaint). Your policy’s appraisal clause, if it has one, generally deals with disagreements over the amount, not whether something is covered. For a coverage fight on a large loss, an attorney may be worth a call.

## IF THE ANSWER STAYS NO

Small hail jobs can make sense in cash. At our shop, paintless dent repair runs $75–$200 per dent for dents up to about half-dollar size; larger dents are priced after inspection, and any trim removal is quoted first. If your claim is approved or overturned, qualifying claims from these storms get the first $1,000 of the deductible covered (above that, case by case, and we do our best), and A.R.S. § 20-468 lets you choose any shop. Related Questions

## ASKED ALONGSIDE THIS ONE

**Q: Does an Arizona insurer have to explain a denial?**

A: Under R20-6-801(G)(1), a denial must be given in writing, and one based on a specific policy provision, condition or exclusion must refer to it.

**Q: Can I reopen a denied hail claim?**

A: You can ask. Send your insurer the new information, such as a corrected date, a written dent count or older photos, and request another review in writing.

**Q: What if my estimate came in under my deductible?**

A: The insurer owes nothing when the covered damage doesn’t exceed the deductible. If dents were missed, a count under PDR lights may change that. If not, compare a cash repair.

**Q: What if I only have liability insurance?**

A: Liability-only coverage doesn’t pay for hail on your own car. You can still repair it for cash; text us photos at (602) 935-6008 for a rough range.
