# IS YOUR INSURANCE HAIL ESTIMATE TOO LOW?

Quick Answer

Often, and it’s usually fixable. After a big storm, first estimates are commonly written from phone photos or a quick look in a drive-in lane, and ordinary light hides many hail dents. Arizona’s claim rule, A.A.C. R20-6-801(H)(5), says an insurer’s repair estimate “shall be in an amount for which it may be reasonably expected the damage can be satisfactorily repaired,” and the insurer has to give you a copy. Don’t argue the total. Get a written dent count, panel by panel, under PDR lights, and have the shop send it to your adjuster as a supplement with photos. At DG Collision Center’s Phoenix shop, qualifying claims are $0 out of pocket: your insurer pays the repair and we cover the first $1,000 of your deductible.

The Longer Answer

## WHY FIRST HAIL ESTIMATES COME UP SHORT

The camera misses what the lights catch. A shallow hail dent has no edge for a phone to see. Under a PDR light board the same panel shows every ding as a broken reflection line, which is why a roof that looked like “a dozen dents” in a driveway photo can count out in the dozens or more. Roof rails, the tops of door frames and the rear edges of hoods are the usual hiding spots.

Storm volume shortens every inspection. The week after a hailstorm, insurers are writing thousands of estimates. A photo review or a few minutes in an inspection lane is built for speed. That’s a fair way to get a claim moving, as long as everyone treats the number as a starting point.

Access work gets left off. Many hail repairs need parts taken off so a technician can reach the back of the panel: the headliner for roof dents, moldings, roof-rack rails, taillights. Those removal-and-install lines (R&I on the estimate) are often missing from a first estimate, and they’re real labor.

## WHAT ARIZONA’S RULE SAYS

A.A.C. R20-6-801(H)(5) sets the standard for the number itself: an amount that can reasonably be expected to fix the car properly, with a copy to you. R20-6-801(H)(6) covers deductions: when an insurer reduces a payment for betterment or depreciation, the reductions “shall be itemized and specified as to dollar amount.” If your estimate has a deduction you can’t explain, ask for the itemized breakdown. And under A.R.S. § 20-468, the shop that does the work is your choice, not the insurer’s.

## HOW TO GET IT CORRECTED

1. Get your copy of the insurer’s estimate. The rule entitles you to it. It’s usually in your insurer’s app or email.

2. Get a written dent count. We count every panel under PDR lights and write the count, dent sizes and access work line by line.

3. Let the shop send the supplement. You open the claim; we send your adjuster the supplement with photos and handle the back-and-forth. Insurers commonly review it on photos or send someone to look at the car at the shop.

4. If it stalls, put it in writing. Ask the adjuster which lines they disagree with and why. If you believe an insurer isn’t following the rules, you can file a complaint with the Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions at [azdfi.gov](https://azdfi.gov/consumers/help-problem/filing-complaint).

Your share. On qualifying claims from the October 20–21, 2026 storms, we cover the first $1,000 of your deductible; above that, it’s case by case, and we do our best. You drive one of our 30+ free Phoenix loaners while the car is in. General information, not legal advice.

## ASKED ALONGSIDE THIS ONE

**Q: Do I have to accept my insurer’s first hail estimate?**

A: No. A first estimate can be revised. When the repair shop documents damage the estimate left out, it sends a supplement with photos, and the insurer reviews it.

**Q: Can the body shop ask my insurer for more money?**

A: Yes, for documented damage. You open the claim; the shop sends the adjuster its dent count, photos and supplement, and handles the correspondence about it.

**Q: Should I wait for the insurer to raise the estimate before bringing the car in?**

A: No. Bring it in or text us photos. Our written dent count is what the supplement is built on, and insurers commonly review it at the shop or from photos.

**Q: Will a bigger estimate get my car totaled?**

A: Rarely. Most hail repairs cost well under a car’s value. Arizona sets no fixed total-loss percentage; see [will insurance total my car for hail?](https://dgcollision.com/answers/will-insurance-total-my-car-for-hail-in-arizona/)
