# WILL I PAY MORE WITH PROGRESSIVE AT AN OUT-OF-NETWORK SHOP?

Quick Answer

Honestly, no — and Progressive is the major carrier least likely to push this. Progressive’s own materials say you can take a covered claim to any shop you trust, and across our published Progressive claim files their steering is the mildest of the big carriers. Texas law puts the shop choice with you (Tex. Ins. Code §1952.301) and §1952.302 bars an insurer from requiring a shop. The real question with Progressive isn’t price — it’s the guarantee: their network guarantee is genuine but applies at network shops for as long as you own or lease, and our written lifetime warranty gives you the same protection on your own shop. Your deductible is the same either way, once.

## THE QUESTION ISN’T PRICE — IT’S WHOSE GUARANTEE

Of the big carriers, Progressive tends to make the lightest push toward its own shops — which matches what Progressive itself says: you can take a covered claim to any shop you trust. Progressive offers two flavors of managed repair — a pre-approved network it pays directly and guarantees, and its own Service Centers where it manages everything concierge-style — and both are conveniences, not requirements. Under §1952.301 the choice is yours, and §1952.302 says Progressive may recommend a shop but can’t cross into “state or suggest” that you have to use one. Going outside the network doesn’t change what your policy owes: the reasonable cost to return your car to its pre-loss condition, minus your deductible, once.

So when the “you’ll pay more” line does come up with Progressive, it’s usually really about the guarantee, not your out-of-pocket — and that’s a question of whose protection, not whether you have it. Progressive’s guarantee applies at its network shops for as long as you own or lease the vehicle; at your own shop, the warranty that protects the repair is the shop’s. Ours is a written lifetime warranty on workmanship and paint on the same “as long as you own” terms — so choosing your own shop isn’t choosing [less protection](https://dgcollision.com/answers/insurance-wont-guarantee-repairs-at-my-shop/), it’s choosing whose. On price itself: Progressive’s Guided Photo estimate is an opening number, supplements are documented and billed to the claim, and any genuine rate gap is ours to resolve with the carrier, never transferred to you.

We can speak to this one with receipts. Our [published Progressive claims shop report](https://dgcollision.com/guides/progressive-claims-shop-report/) runs the numbers from our own files — approvals in roughly two days, the mildest steering of the majors, supplements paid where the teardown required them — and the claim-process detail lives on our [Progressive body shop page](https://dgcollision.com/progressive-body-shop-lewisville/). The same out-of-network answer holds for every carrier (the [any-carrier version](https://dgcollision.com/answers/will-i-pay-more-at-an-out-of-network-body-shop/) and the [State Farm version](https://dgcollision.com/answers/state-farm-out-of-network-body-shop/) land in the same place); Progressive just tends to get there with the least friction. If a recommendation ever turns into pressure, §1952.304 bars the gag-clause version and the Texas Department of Insurance takes complaints. Bring us the claim number and a photo, and the paperwork becomes ours.

## ASKED ALONGSIDE THIS ONE

Does Progressive actually pay less at my own shop? +

A: No — your policy pays the reasonable cost to repair the car to its pre-loss condition wherever you choose, and your deductible is the same either way, paid once. Progressive’s own materials say you can take a covered claim to any shop you trust; the network is a convenience, not a discount you forfeit by going elsewhere.

Will I lose Progressive’s guarantee outside their network? +

A: Progressive’s guarantee applies at its network shops for as long as you own or lease. But the carrier never repairs your car — the shop does, so the warranty that protects you is the shop’s. Ours is a written lifetime warranty on workmanship and paint on the same terms, so you’re choosing whose protection, not whether you have it.

Can Progressive require me to use a network shop? +

A: No. §1952.301 gives you the shop choice and §1952.302 bars an insurer from requiring a particular shop — the ceiling is “recommend,” not “state or suggest” that you must. Progressive’s own position is that you can take a covered claim to any shop you trust.

Is a claim slower at my own shop with Progressive? +

A: Not in our files — our published Progressive shop report shows approvals in roughly two days from this independent floor. The Guided Photo estimate is an opening number; teardown finds the real one, and we work the supplement with Progressive directly while a loaner from our own fleet keeps you moving.
