What Real Auto Paint Work Means

Paint Is a Craft — And We Treat It That Way

A great paint job is the difference between a car that looks repaired and a car that looks like it was never damaged. The gap between those two outcomes isn't the paint itself — it's the prep, the color science, the spray technique, the booth environment, and the finish work. Any paint shop can load a gun with PPG. Very few can lay it down so that sunlight, cloud cover, and artificial light all read the color the same. That's what we do. Paint work is often the final stage of our collision repair and hail damage repair jobs — but we also do standalone paint work for vehicles that never saw an accident.

Our Lewisville booth runs PPG Envirobase High Performance waterborne basecoat and Sherwin-Williams Ultra 9K as alternative system, topped with 2K urethane clear. Every color starts with the OEM paint code from your VIN plate, then gets refined against a spectrophotometer reading of your actual vehicle — because after a few years of Texas sun, factory paint no longer matches the factory code. The difference between formula-match and spectro-match is the difference between "close" and "invisible." Our painters complete annual I-CAR refinish training to stay current on products and techniques. A lot of our high-end refinish work comes from Highland Village — owners of darker blacks, pearl whites, and European tri-coats who need the spectrophotometer match, not a formula guess.

What We Do

OUR PAINT & REFINISHING SERVICES

Six core services covering every paint need — from a single bumper scuff to a full-color change on a classic.

Our 7-Stage Process

HOW WE PAINT A VEHICLE

Every job goes through the same disciplined sequence. Skip a step, and you can see it in the finish.

1
Stage 1 · Color Prep

Color Match Analysis

Pull the OEM paint code from your VIN plate as a starting reference. Then use a spectrophotometer (X-Rite or PPG RapidMatch) to read the actual current color on your vehicle — which may have faded or shifted from the factory spec after years of Texas sun. Generate a precise spray formula calibrated to your car's real-world color, not a factory-new target.

2
Stage 2

Surface Preparation & Sanding

Wash, degrease, and decontaminate (clay bar if needed). Feather-sand any damaged area out to clean metal or sound paint. Mask off adjacent panels, trim, glass, emblems. Prep is 80% of paint work — if the substrate is wrong, no paint system can save it.

3
Stage 3

Primer Application

Apply 2K urethane primer surfacer over repaired areas. Let it flash, fully cure, then block-sand with 320-600 grit to a dead-flat surface. Primer fills micro-imperfections and gives the basecoat a uniform, bonded substrate. Surface geometry gets verified at this stage — before color goes down.

4
Stage 4

Base Coat Application

Apply PPG Envirobase waterborne basecoat (or Sherwin-Williams Ultra 9K) in 2-3 wet coats using HVLP spray guns. Climate-controlled downdraft booth keeps air clean and temp/humidity stable throughout. For metallic and pearl finishes, a blend coat feathers into adjacent panels so there's no visible edge at the transition.

5
Stage 5

Clear Coat Application

Apply 2 full wet coats of 2K urethane clear coat. Clear is what provides the gloss, UV protection, and chip/chemical resistance — and depth of clear determines how the color reads in sunlight. Flash time between coats per manufacturer spec.

6
Stage 6

Baking & Curing

Bake at 140-160°F for 30-45 minutes with infrared lamps or full-booth heat cycle. Proper cure crosslinks the 2K clear coat, maximizing hardness, chip resistance, and chemical durability. Under-baked paint stays soft and marks easily — one of the most common failures at cut-rate shops.

7
Stage 7 · Final

Inspection, Full Detail & Delivery

Color-sand any tiny imperfections with 1500-3000 grit. Compound and machine-polish to factory gloss. Final QC under multiple light sources — sunlight, fluorescent, LED — to verify color match from every viewing angle. Remove masking, reinstall trim and badges. Then a complimentary full interior and exterior detail: vacuum, upholstery wipe-down, dashboard clean, windows, hand wash, hand-polish, and tire dressing. The car leaves looking showroom-new.

Paint Systems We Use

WHY PREMIUM PAINT SYSTEMS MATTER

The paint brand isn't marketing — it's durability, color accuracy, warranty eligibility, and what most vehicle manufacturers specify.

Primary System

PPG Envirobase High Performance

Industry-standard waterborne basecoat used by most OEM manufacturers (Ford, GM, Honda, Toyota, BMW, Mercedes). Low-VOC, exceptional color accuracy, and covered by PPG's extensive paint database — over 70,000 factory color formulas pulled directly from manufacturer specifications.

  • OEM-specified by major auto manufacturers
  • PPG RapidMatch spectrophotometer integration
  • Exceptional metallic and pearl reproduction
  • Low-VOC environmental compliance (PPG sustainability)
  • Backed by PPG warranty program
Alternative System

Sherwin-Williams Ultra 9K

Premium waterborne basecoat with a reputation for vibrant metallics and fast recoat times. We use Ultra 9K for specific color families where it out-performs PPG, or when a customer requests matching their vehicle's factory paint system.

  • Sherwin-Williams Automotive Refinish product line
  • ChromaVision color retrieval system
  • Fast flash times and efficient production
  • Broad coverage for domestic and import colors
  • Nationally-backed manufacturer warranty

Both systems pair with 2K urethane clear coat for UV protection, gloss retention, and 10-15+ years of real-world durability. We specify the system per job, not per customer — whichever matches your factory paint best wins.

Our Facility

STATE-OF-THE-ART DOWNDRAFT PAINT BOOTH

The booth is where professional paint work separates from parking-lot jobs. Our Lewisville booth is the reason our finishes read factory-original.

Why the Booth Matters

Paint is sensitive to temperature, humidity, airborne dust, airflow direction, and lighting. Each of those variables can wreck a finish. Shops painting outdoors or in open bays accept defects and call them "character." In a proper downdraft booth, we control all of it.

Downdraft specifically means air enters from the ceiling and exits through floor-level filters, pulling overspray and contaminants away from the vehicle instead of swirling them around it. Dust lands on the floor, not on your new finish.

  • Full downdraft airflow — top-to-bottom filtered air, no swirl
  • Climate controlled — temp + humidity stable year-round
  • Multi-stage intake filtration — medical-grade particulate removal
  • High-CRI LED lighting — true color visibility during spray
  • Full-booth bake cycle — 140-160°F cure for 2K clear
  • EPA-compliant exhaust — meets or exceeds environmental standards

The DG Paint Guarantee

LIFETIME PAINT WARRANTY

For as long as you own the vehicle. No proration, no fine print, no loophole clauses.

Our Promise

We stand behind every panel we paint. If our paint ever peels, cracks, fades unnaturally, or shows defects in workmanship, we fix it at no charge — for as long as you own the vehicle. That's not a limited warranty with a 5-year sunset clause; that's a real commitment backed by 45+ years of doing it right.

✓ What's Covered

  • Peeling or flaking of paint or clear coat
  • Cracking or crazing of clear coat
  • Premature fading not attributable to normal wear
  • Defects in workmanship (runs, orange peel, fisheye)
  • Color mismatch beyond acceptable tolerance
  • Adhesion failures on repaired panels

✗ What's Not Covered

  • New physical damage (chips, scratches, impacts)
  • Damage from accidents or weather events
  • Neglect (automatic car wash abrasion, harsh chemicals)
  • Paint on panels we didn't paint
  • Normal wear after 15+ years of service
  • Aftermarket modifications that affect paint

Simple rule: if something we did goes wrong, we fix it. If something happens that we didn't cause, we'll still take care of you on a repair — we just don't cover it under warranty. Questions? Call (972) 219-0864.

LIFETIME WARRANTY INCLUDED

Not standard industry-wide — it's standard at DG. Send photos, get a real estimate back in 15 minutes.

Should You Repaint?

6 SIGNS YOUR CAR NEEDS A REPAINT

How to tell if paintwork is actually needed — vs. if a detail job and some polish will fix it. Walk out to your car and check for these in daylight.

1

Clear Coat Peeling or Flaking

Look at the hood, roof, and trunk — the panels most exposed to UV. If you see white haze, peeling edges, or flaking clear, the clear coat has failed. This can't be polished out; the clear needs to come off and be resprayed. Common on 10-15+ year-old vehicles in Texas. Catch it before the base paint starts oxidizing too.

2

Deep Scratches Through the Paint

If a scratch exposes primer (gray/white) or bare metal, polishing won't fix it. You need paint. Scratches that only go through the clear coat (still colored at the bottom) can sometimes be wet-sanded and polished, but anything past the clear needs a spot refinish.

3

Rust Spots

Small rust bubbles under the paint, especially on rocker panels, wheel arches, trunk lip, or door bottoms. Rust only spreads — it doesn't heal. The longer you wait, the more metal has to be cut out and replaced. Paint-and-blend repair on early rust is affordable; waiting until panels need replacement is not.

4

Fading, Oxidation, or Chalky Finish

Paint that looks dull, white-hazed, or discolored compared to years ago. On solid colors, a full paint correction (multi-stage polish) may restore it. On metallics, the metal flake is often embedded too deeply in degraded clear to polish — paint is the only fix. Test: wipe a small area with polishing compound; if the dullness comes back quickly, you need paint.

5

Inconsistent Color After Previous Repair

A panel that reads a different shade than adjacent panels — especially visible in sunlight. This usually means the previous repair was done with a formula-match only (no spectro) or without blend coats. Fixable: we respray the affected panel with spectrophotometer match and blend into neighbors.

6

Preparing to Sell or Trade

Cosmetic paint condition is one of the biggest drivers of resale value. A $2,000 refinish on a panel with visible damage can add $3,000-$5,000 to trade-in value on most vehicles — a strong ROI. Note that repainted panels often get flagged on Carfax reports, which can affect resale value on nicer vehicles — so for cars with intact factory paint showing only fade, a full paint correction (polish) may preserve resale better than a repaint. If you're planning to sell within 12 months, we'll tell you honestly which repairs pencil out.

Paint Questions

AUTO PAINT FAQ

Yes — within the limits of what modern color match technology allows. We start from your vehicle's OEM paint code (on the VIN plate), then use a spectrophotometer to read the actual current color on your car — because paint fades and shifts over years of Texas sun. The spectro reading generates a precise formula calibrated to your vehicle's real-world color, not a factory-new spec. For tri-coat pearls, candy finishes, and metallics, we also apply blend coats into adjacent panels so the transition is invisible from any viewing angle.
Our 2K urethane clear coat is handleable within hours of baking and fully cures within 24-48 hours. We bake painted panels at 140-160°F for 30-45 minutes in the booth to accelerate cure and maximize hardness. You can drive the car within 24 hours of pickup, but avoid automatic car washes, waxing, or polishing for 30 days to let the clear coat reach full hardness. We include written post-paint care instructions on every job.
If you're painting a single panel or doing a repair blend, we blend the new paint into adjacent panels so any color difference transitions invisibly. For most colors and small-to-medium repairs the match is indistinguishable under normal lighting. For tri-coat pearls, some metallics, and aged paint, blending is essential — a panel-only repaint on these finishes can show a subtle color shift at certain angles. We'll tell you upfront whether your color needs blending and price accordingly.
Costs depend heavily on scope, color, and vehicle size. Typical ranges: small spot $200-$500; single panel $500-$1,000; bumper cover $500-$1,200; multi-panel blend $1,200-$2,500; half-vehicle partial $2,000-$4,500; full vehicle repaint (standard color) $3,500-$7,500; premium/custom full repaint $7,500-$15,000+. See our cost table for the full breakdown. Estimates are always free and written.
Yes. Clear coat failure (peeling, cracking, white haze) is one of the most common repaint jobs we do in Texas because UV and heat eat factory clear over time. We sand the failing clear back to clean basecoat, spray fresh 2K urethane clear, and blend into adjacent panels so the repair is invisible. Full panel clear repair starts around $500-$800 per panel depending on size and prep needed. Backed by our lifetime paint warranty.
A professionally applied PPG or Sherwin-Williams paint system with proper prep and 2K urethane clear coat should last 10-15+ years with basic care, matching or exceeding factory paint durability. Key factors: regular washing (avoid harsh detergents), periodic waxing or ceramic coating, garage storage when possible, and prompt repair of chips before they become rust. Our lifetime paint warranty covers defects in workmanship for as long as you own the vehicle.
Yes, when paint is part of a covered claim. Collision, comprehensive hail, and vandalism claims typically cover refinish work on affected panels — including paint, materials, and labor. Cosmetic paint work not tied to a claim (sun fade, old scratches, customization) is out-of-pocket. If you're filing through insurance, we handle the paint line items directly with your adjuster and ensure your claim covers proper refinish procedure, not a cut-rate estimate that would force us to skip steps.
Yes — full color changes are one of our specialties. A proper color change involves painting every visible area: door jambs, trunk jamb, under hood, inside fuel door, inside door edges. Cutting corners on these hidden areas is how you spot a cheap color change. Full color changes typically run $7,500-$15,000+ depending on vehicle size and finish complexity (solid vs metallic vs pearl vs candy). Keep in mind that changing color may affect resale value unless the new color is equally desirable. We'll advise honestly whether a color change makes sense for your goals.
Waterborne paint uses water as the main carrier; solvent-based uses petroleum solvents. Since the mid-2000s, every major auto manufacturer has shifted to waterborne basecoat for lower VOC emissions, better color reproduction (especially metallics and pearls), and EPA compliance. Our PPG Envirobase and Sherwin-Williams Ultra 9K are both waterborne systems. Solvent-based basecoat still exists for specialty and custom work, but for production OEM-matching refinish, waterborne is the industry standard. Both get topped with a 2K urethane clear coat — the clear isn't waterborne.
The first 30 days matter most — that's when the clear coat is still reaching full hardness. Do: hand wash with pH-neutral automotive soap, rinse off bird droppings or bug splatter within 24 hours (acidic substances etch soft clear), park in shade when possible. Don't: use automatic car washes (the brushes and harsh detergents mark soft clear), wax or polish (wax will cure into the clear), park under trees (sap is the worst), or pressure-wash at close range. After 30 days you can wax; after 60 days a ceramic coating is safe. We include written care instructions with every paint job.
Depends on the car's value, your plans, and what "worth it" means. Rough math: a $4,000-$6,000 refinish can add $3,000-$5,000 to trade-in value on a nicer vehicle ($20k+ resale) — close to break-even but you drive a better-looking car in the meantime. On a $5,000 beater, a $5,000 repaint rarely pencils out financially. For classics, enthusiast vehicles, or cars with sentimental value, paint is often worth it regardless of ROI. For daily drivers you plan to keep long-term, a targeted repair (clear coat restoration on one or two panels) is usually a better use of money than a full repaint. We'll give you an honest assessment — including when we think you shouldn't paint.
Yes — every paint job includes a free full interior and exterior detail at pickup. Full interior vacuum, upholstery and carpet cleaning, dashboard and trim wipe-down, window cleaning inside and out, full exterior hand wash, hand-polish of the repainted panels, and tire dressing. Roughly a $200-$300 detailing value included in every paint project at no additional charge. Applies to every repair at DG Collision Center, whether it's a single-panel blend or a full-vehicle repaint.

Paint Terminology

AUTO PAINT GLOSSARY

Quick reference for the technical terms we use on estimates and in this guide. If you've ever wondered what "2K clear" actually means, read on.

Spectrophotometer (tool)
A precision instrument that reads a color's wavelength characteristics from your actual vehicle and generates a paint formula calibrated to that reading. Brands like X-Rite MA-T12 or PPG RapidMatch. More accurate than formula-match from OEM paint code alone, because real paint fades and shifts over time.
Downdraft Booth (facility)
A paint booth where filtered air enters from the ceiling and exits through floor-level grates, pulling overspray and dust away from the vehicle. Opposite of crossdraft (horizontal airflow), which is more common in older shops but produces more finish defects.
Basecoat / Clearcoat (paint system)
Modern two-stage paint. Basecoat carries the color (and metallic flake / pearl particles). Clearcoat is a separate transparent layer over the basecoat that provides gloss, UV protection, and chip resistance. Virtually every factory-painted vehicle since the late 1980s uses basecoat/clearcoat.
2K Urethane Clear Coat (product)
"2K" means two-component — the clear coat and a catalytic hardener mix right before spraying, then chemically cross-link as they cure. Results in much harder, more durable finish than single-stage ("1K") clear. Industry standard for collision refinish; what you want on your car.
HVLP Spray Gun (tool)
High Volume, Low Pressure. A spray gun technology that moves a large volume of paint air at lower atomizing pressure, reducing overspray by 50-70% vs conventional guns. EPA-compliant and the standard in modern paint work. If a shop uses cheap conventional guns, you'll see it in the finish.
Blend Coat (technique)
When repainting a single panel, painters spray a light "blend coat" of basecoat into adjacent panels — not full coverage, just feathered — so the edge of the new paint fades into the old. Without a blend coat, a slight color mismatch shows as a visible line at the panel edge.
Flash Time (timing)
The brief waiting period between spray coats that lets the solvent or water carrier evaporate before the next coat goes down. Typically 5-15 minutes depending on product and conditions. Rushing flash time causes solvent pop, orange peel, and delamination.
Tri-Coat / Pearl Finish (color type)
A three-stage paint system used for white pearls, deep metallics, and candy colors. Basecoat, then mid-coat (the pearl or tint layer), then clearcoat. Requires more skill and materials to match because the mid-coat's opacity and angle-dependent color shift have to be reproduced exactly.
Bake Cycle (process)
Heating the painted vehicle in the booth to 140-160°F for 30-45 minutes after clear coat application. Accelerates cross-linking of the 2K clear coat and maximizes final hardness. Under-baked paint stays soft and marks easily — a common defect at cut-rate shops that skip or shortcut the bake.
