What actually stretches a repair isn’t shop labor — it’s parts backorders, insurance approvals, and damage found at teardown.
In DFW, collision repair timelines run 2–5 business days for bumper and cosmetic work, 1–2 weeks for moderate multi-panel damage with paint, and 3–6 weeks for structural or frame repairs. Full-vehicle hail PDR is 3–7 days. Delays are almost always parts backorders, insurance supplement cycles, or hidden damage found at teardown — not shop labor.
- Bumper & cosmetic: 2–5 business days once parts are in hand. Add ADAS calibration if radar or a camera is touched.
- Moderate panel + paint: 1–2 weeks. Metal work, blend refinishing, reassembly, calibration.

How Long Does Collision Repair Actually Take?
The honest answer: a repair takes as long as the last part to arrive, plus the last supplement to be approved, plus any ADAS calibration at the end. Shop labor — sand, metal, paint, reassembly — is usually the fastest link in that chain. The number you actually want at drop-off is not “how many hours of labor?” but “when does every component get here, when does the insurer sign off on the total, and can calibration happen in-house?”
Those three variables are why two shops can quote the same repair at wildly different completion dates. A shop that orders every part on day one, submits one thorough supplement instead of five partial ones, and calibrates cameras and radar in their own building on the last day will beat a shop that discovers each damaged bracket mid-repair, faxes photos to the adjuster in batches, and sublets calibration to a dealership two weeks out. That process gap is often 5–10 business days on the exact same physical damage.
This guide gives you the realistic timelines by damage tier, what actually stretches them, and what a well-run shop should be doing behind the scenes to make sure the date they quote at drop-off is the date you actually pick up. Real DFW Collision Repair Timelines By Damage Tier
These are the timelines we see in our own shop, month in and month out, for standard passenger vehicles. Luxury and exotic vehicles — where OEM parts ship from Germany, Italy, or the manufacturer’s regional distribution centers — run longer at every tier. Numbers are business days once your car is in the shop and the insurance approval is in hand.

Two things to notice. First, the tier that determines a repair is the worst damage on the vehicle, not the average. A car with a bumper hit plus a bent rail is a structural repair, not a cosmetic one, and it runs on the structural timeline. Second, the ranges assume the shop has a real process. A shop that discovers hidden damage two weeks into a repair, orders parts one at a time, and sublets ADAS out will run 40–80% longer than the ranges above on the exact same physical damage.
How Long Does Hail Damage Repair Take?
Hail is a special case because the fastest fix — paintless dent repair — skips the entire refinish stage. A full-vehicle PDR repair typically runs 3–7 days depending on dent count and how much glass or headliner removal is required to access panels. A PDR technician working under proper reflective lighting places roughly 200–500 dents per day; do that math against your storm and you have a rough day count.
Where hail timelines stretch is when panels have cracked paint or sharp creases that PDR can’t fully address. Now you have a mixed repair: PDR on most panels, sand-and-paint work on one or two, and the paint side dictates the timeline. A mixed repair commonly runs 1–3 weeks instead of days. Two hail-specific timeline notes worth knowing. First: severe hail also breaks glass. Windshield replacement plus ADAS recalibration adds 1–2 days on top of PDR. Second: a bad DFW storm creates metroplex-wide backlogs (covered in more detail below) that are usually the deciding factor in your total wait, not the repair itself. Getting your estimate written in the first 72 hours after a storm matters more than which shop is technically fastest at PDR.

What Actually Causes Collision Repair Delays?
Three things, in this order of impact:
1. Parts backorders. A single backordered clip, sensor, headlamp housing, or door skin can freeze an otherwise-finished car in the paint booth or assembly bay for days. Late-model EV and luxury parts sometimes ship from an overseas warehouse; some 2024–2026 model-year parts are on manufacturer allocation and go out of stock for weeks. A shop that orders the complete parts list on day one catches the backorders early — a shop that orders piecemeal discovers them one at a time, mid-repair.
2. Insurance approval and supplement cycles. When teardown reveals damage that wasn’t in the original estimate (which happens on the majority of moderate-and-above repairs), the shop has to document it, photograph it, and get carrier sign-off before ordering the additional parts and starting that section of the work. Each supplement cycle typically adds 2–5 business days. A repair with three separate small supplements can easily add two weeks of dead time that never touches shop labor. 3. Hidden damage found at teardown. Modern unibody vehicles crumple in engineered ways, and the visible damage is often 60–80% of the total. A bumper hit may reveal a bent core support, cracked bracket, or a compromised radar mount — each of which needs its own part, its own paint prep, and its own approval. This is where blueprinting pays off: shops that tear down first find everything at once instead of week by week.
Shop labor — the metal, primer, base, clear, cure, and assembly — is rarely the bottleneck. On a moderate repair, actual hands-on time is a few days; the calendar time is the queue in front of it plus the pauses between stages waiting on parts and approvals.
How Much Time Do Insurance Supplements Add To A Repair?
A supplement is a request to your insurance carrier to authorize additional repair costs that weren’t in the original estimate — either because hidden damage was discovered at teardown, or because a specific part cost has changed, or because the initial estimate was written from photos and missed something visible only in person. Every supplement follows the same pattern: shop documents the additional damage, photographs it, uploads to the carrier’s portal, waits for the adjuster to review and approve, then orders any new parts.
That cycle typically runs 2–5 business days per supplement. Carriers have prompt-response guidelines but real-world response varies by carrier, adjuster workload, and how clearly the supplement is documented. A well-photographed supplement with itemized labor times gets faster approval than a vague one.
The strategy that shortens this: one comprehensive supplement instead of three or four small ones. If the shop tears the vehicle down fully at drop-off and documents everything before any work starts, the carrier sees one thorough request. That’s the essence of blueprinting, and it can cut 5–10 business days out of a moderate-repair timeline that would otherwise get stop-started by each new discovery.

What Is Blueprinting And Why Does It Shorten Repairs?
Blueprinting means tearing the vehicle down and documenting every damaged part before any repairs begin, rather than discovering damage mid-job. The idea is simple: all parts get ordered at once, the carrier sees one complete supplement instead of several, and the repair runs continuously through the shop instead of pausing every few days for the next discovery-and-approval cycle. When done properly it’s the single biggest lever a shop has to hold the quoted completion date honest.
Here’s how the process runs in our shop from the moment the vehicle rolls in:
Stage 1 — Full Teardown At Drop-Off
Bumper cover, headlamp, fender liners, wheel-well trim, and any structural covers come off in the first hours. On a rear-end impact we pull the trunk trim, spare-tire well, and bumper reinforcement so we can see the frame rails and taillight housings directly. Every damaged part — visible or hidden — gets documented before we plan a single repair operation.
Stage 2 — Complete Parts List Ordered At Once
Every OEM part identified during teardown gets ordered on day one: bracket, sensor, headlamp, fender, hinge, harness clips, everything. This is where a lot of shops stumble — they order the big items and figure they’ll grab the clips later. Then a $4 wiring-harness retainer becomes the reason the car sits for three days waiting on next-day delivery.
Stage 3 — One Comprehensive Supplement To The Insurer
Complete teardown findings are photographed with the vehicle on the lift, itemized against the original estimate, and submitted as one thorough supplement. Insurers approve one complete request faster than several small ones spread across a week — and the shop gets clean authorization to proceed on the full repair scope instead of section by section.
Stage 4 — Repair Executed To Plan With No Stop-Start Pauses
With parts in hand and one approved supplement, the vehicle moves through metal work, primer, base, clear, cure, and reassembly on a continuous schedule. Each stage flows into the next instead of pausing every 2–5 business days to wait on the next approval or the next backordered part. This is where the compressed timeline actually shows up.
Stage 5 — Post-Repair Scan, ADAS Calibration, Delivery On The Quoted Date
Final pre-delivery: full-vehicle post-repair scan confirms no active fault codes, in-house ADAS calibration handles any cameras and radar affected by the repair, quality inspection, wash-and-detail, and delivery. The date the customer picks up is the date we quoted at drop-off — because blueprinting removed the surprises.
The trade-off is that blueprinting costs the shop a day up front — that first day of full teardown is labor that isn’t producing visible progress yet. A shop that hasn’t built the process around this either doesn’t do it, or does it inconsistently. Ask the shop at drop-off: “Do you tear down before you order parts, and will I get one supplement or several?” The answer tells you most of what you need to know about their timeline discipline.
Does ADAS Calibration Add Time To Collision Repair?
When done in-house, calibration typically adds about a day at the end of the repair — the target board setup, the drive cycle, and the printout for the file. Shops that sublet calibration to a dealership commonly add 2–4 extra days waiting on an appointment, transporting the vehicle to the dealer, and getting it back. That’s a real timeline difference.
Any repair that touches a windshield, a front or rear bumper (radar, parking sensors), a mirror (blind-spot camera), the front grille (adaptive cruise sensor), or any structural point that shifts sensor mounting angles requires calibration before delivery. It’s not optional — a car delivered without calibration on a system that needed it can have lane-keep, blind-spot, or emergency-braking sensors reading incorrectly. The reason it matters to your timeline: on a busy week for calibration a dealership may be 4–7 business days out on appointments. Shops without in-house capability plan for that; shops that don’t plan for it stall at the end of the repair. When you ask a shop about their timeline, one of the fastest ways to gauge process discipline is to ask: “Do you calibrate in-house or sublet?”
How Does DFW Hail Season Change Repair Timelines?
North Texas is one of the highest-frequency severe-hail regions in the country. When a major storm rolls through — and by “major” we mean the kind that leaves tens of thousands of vehicles with dents in a single afternoon — the metroplex’s body shops go from normal queues to weeks-long backlogs almost overnight. The NOAA Storm Events Database documents just how frequent these events are here.
The math is straightforward. A large storm can hit 50,000–150,000 vehicles across the metroplex. DFW body shops collectively handle maybe 2,000–5,000 repairs a week under normal conditions. Even with catastrophe (CAT) teams brought in from other markets, the queue takes months to work through, and the vehicles at the back of the queue wait 6–10 weeks just to get onto a shop’s calendar, before any repair time gets added.
Two things follow from that. First: the single biggest factor in how long your hail repair takes is how early after the storm you get in line. A written estimate on day 2 puts you in the front third of the queue; day 20 puts you in the back. Second: shops that carry insurance-direct capability and a big loaner fleet can keep more customers driving during that wait — not faster repair, but the wait doesn’t cost you an out-of-pocket rental.

Do I Get A Loaner Car While My Vehicle Is Being Repaired?
At DG Collision Center, yes — we maintain a fleet of 50+ loaner vehicles, free to customers for the full duration of the repair, whether that’s three days or six weeks. There’s no daily rate, no drop-off fee, no mileage cap. That takes the rental-coverage countdown off the timeline: you’re not paying out of pocket while a backordered part ships or a supplement waits on your carrier.
This is worth understanding because it changes how you should think about repair time. If a rental car is costing you $35–$50 a day out of pocket (either because your policy caps rental at 30 days, or you don’t have rental coverage at all), a 5-day timeline stretch on a supplement cycle costs you real money. If the shop provides the loaner free for the duration, you can focus on getting the repair done right instead of pressuring the shop to skip steps.
Two things to check with any shop: do they provide a loaner during the repair, and if so, is there a duration cap? Some shops offer 7–10 days and then hand you back to your own rental coverage. Our fleet is uncapped — you drive the loaner as long as your car is in our shop.
How Often Should My Body Shop Update Me During A Repair?
You should never have to chase the shop for news. Our standard is a proactive update at every milestone — initial estimate submitted to the carrier, approval received, parts ordered, teardown findings and supplement submitted, supplement approved, primer, paint, clear, reassembly, calibration — and at minimum a status touch twice a week even when nothing has changed. A quiet week from the shop usually means the repair stalled on parts or a supplement and nobody re-planned it.
The other thing to watch: whether the shop tells you why a delay happened, not just that one did. “Waiting on parts” is not a status update — “the passenger-side headlamp housing is on manufacturer allocation, next shipment lands Thursday, we’ll be reassembling Friday afternoon” is a status update. The specifics tell you the shop is actually managing the repair, not just moving it from one bay to the next as slots open up.
If you’re at a shop that’s gone quiet for more than a week, ask three questions: what part is the repair waiting on, when does it arrive, and what’s the revised completion date. If the shop can’t answer any of the three, that’s a real signal.
What Can You Do To Speed Up Your Repair?
A handful of things you can do that meaningfully shorten the timeline:
- Photograph the damage in bright daylight from multiple angles and send those with your estimate request. Better initial documentation means a more accurate estimate up front and fewer surprises at teardown.
- Open the claim with your carrier before dropping off. Give the shop the claim number at drop-off so they can start the supplement process immediately rather than waiting on carrier-shop matching.
- Pick a shop that blueprints and calibrates in-house. Both of these compress the timeline more than any other single choice. Ask directly.
- Approve any customer-pay upgrades (like a wheel refinish) on day one instead of during the repair — a mid-repair addition can bump the car out of its paint slot to make room for another vehicle.

- Stay reachable by phone during business hours. Most stalls need one quick customer conversation — approving a supplement, agreeing on an OEM-vs-aftermarket part, deciding on a repair-vs-replace call. A shop that can’t reach you for a day loses a day.
What doesn’t speed up a repair: calling for updates every day, offering to pay extra to jump ahead, or asking for “just the quick fix” on damage that actually needs the full procedure. The shop’s process protects the safety of the finished vehicle. Pressuring past it costs you warranty coverage and can hide damage that shows up later as a diminished-value hit at resale.
