CAN YOU DRIVE A CAR WITH HAIL DAMAGE IN ARIZONA?

Quick Answer

Usually, yes. Dents on the hood, roof or trunk don’t affect how the car drives, and driving won’t make them worse. The exceptions are safety items: a cracked windshield that blocks your view, broken headlights, taillights or brake lights, or a damaged mirror. Get those fixed before you drive at night or on the freeway. Driving a dented car also doesn’t hurt your claim, but don’t wait too long to open it. If you’d rather not drive it at all, we pick it up for free anywhere in the Valley.

The Longer Answer

A TWO-MINUTE CHECK BEFORE YOU DRIVE

Glass. Look through the windshield from the driver’s seat. Chips outside your line of sight are usually fine for now. A crack across your view, or one that’s spreading, needs attention first. A broken sunroof or side window lets in rain and dust; cover it before you drive.

Lights. Turn on the headlights and hazards and walk around the car. Have someone press the brake while you check the brake lights. Large hail can crack lenses, and a cracked lens can let water in and short the lamp.

Mirrors and sensors. Make sure the side mirrors are intact and adjustable. Many newer cars have cameras or sensors in the mirrors and windshield; if a warning light appears after the storm, mention it when you call.

The dents themselves. These are cosmetic for driving purposes. They won’t spread, and paintless dent repair works the same next week as today. The one exception is cracked paint. If you see spiderweb lines in the clear coat, the bare metal can start to corrode, so don’t leave it for months.

The claim. Driving the car doesn’t hurt your claim, but new damage after the storm isn’t part of it, so take photos now. Use the storm date as the date of loss: October 20, 2026 for the East Valley, October 21 for north Phoenix and Glendale. You can choose any shop under A.R.S. § 20-468, and on qualifying claims we cover your deductible up to $2,000, depending on the damage.

No. Hail dents don’t spread from driving or car washes. Cracked paint is different; get that looked at soon so bare metal doesn’t start to rust.

A small chip outside your view is usually fine short-term. A crack that blocks your view is a safety problem; get it replaced before driving much, especially at night.

No, as long as the damage you claim is from the storm. Take photos now so any later dings aren’t mixed in, and use the storm date as the date of loss.

Don’t. We pick up and drop off for free anywhere in the Valley, from Glendale and Peoria to Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler.
