DOES A HAIL CLAIM RAISE YOUR INSURANCE IN ARIZONA?
Usually not much by itself, but no Arizona law guarantees it. Hail is a comprehensive claim, so there’s no fault and no accident on your record. Arizona’s rate statute, A.R.S. § 20-263, bars a premium increase for an accident you didn’t cause or significantly contribute to, but it speaks to accidents and doesn’t mention weather. What can actually move your bill is losing a claims-free discount, having several claims in a short stretch, or a rate increase that hits everyone after a big storm season, whether they filed or not. Before you file, ask your agent one question: “Does a comprehensive claim affect my claims-free discount?”
The Longer Answer
THREE THINGS THAT CAN CHANGE YOUR PREMIUM, AND ONE THAT CAN’T
What can’t happen: an at-fault surcharge. A hail claim isn’t a collision, and nobody is found at fault. It goes under the comprehensive part of your policy, alongside theft, glass and falling objects. It won’t show up as an accident when your premium is calculated.
1. A claims-free discount. This is the one that catches people. Many insurers give a discount for going a set period without claims. Some only count at-fault claims, and others count every claim, comprehensive included. Your policy and your agent can tell you which applies before you decide.
2. Claim frequency. One weather claim in several years rarely moves anything. Several claims of any kind in a short window can affect how an insurer rates you at renewal. That’s the honest reason to skip filing for a single small dent.
3. Storm-season rate filings. After a costly year of storms, insurers in a region may raise base rates for everyone. That increase comes whether you file or not, so skipping a legitimate claim won’t protect you from it.
Where § 20-263 fits. The statute protects drivers from premium increases over accidents they didn’t cause, and it requires an insurer that raises a premium for accident involvement to tell you why. It’s a real protection, but it’s written about accidents. We don’t read it as a promise about hail claims, and we’d rather tell you that than overstate it. This is general information, not legal advice.
The practical rule. If the repair clearly exceeds your deductible, filing is usually worth it, and for qualifying claims from the October 20–21, 2026 Phoenix storms we cover your deductible up to $2,000, depending on the damage. If the damage is a few dents, a cash paintless repair at $75–$200 per dent keeps it off your claims history entirely. That price covers dents up to about half-dollar size; larger ones are priced after inspection. Get a written dent count first, then decide. And you can choose any shop for the repair under A.R.S. § 20-468.
