CAN YOU SELL OR TRADE IN A HAIL-DAMAGED CAR IN ARIZONA?

Quick Answer

Yes, but you’ll usually get less than the repair would cost you. Dealers inspect every panel under bright light, and they take the cost of fixing hail dents, plus a margin, off your trade-in offer. If you have a claim open, repairing first usually returns more money: your insurer pays the repair, and on qualifying claims from the October 20–21, 2026 Phoenix storms we cover the first $1,000 of your deductible, so many drivers pay $0 out of pocket. If the car was declared a total loss, Arizona’s salvage rules (A.R.S. § 28-2091) apply and the title is branded, which lowers what anyone will pay.

The Longer Answer

REPAIR FIRST, OR SELL AS-IS?

How dealers price hail. A trade-in appraisal walks the car under bright light, the same way we count dents. Hail is easy to find that way. The dealer estimates its cost to fix the dents, adds a margin, and subtracts it. Private buyers do the same thing less precisely, and often more harshly.

When repairing first pays off. If you have comprehensive coverage and a claim for the October storms, your insurer pays the repair. That money goes back into the car instead of coming off your trade-in. For qualifying claims, we cover the first $1,000 of your deductible (above $1,000, case by case, and we do our best). Paintless dent repair also keeps the factory paint, so there are no repaint lines for an appraiser to flag.

When selling as-is can make sense. If there’s no claim, the damage is light and you’re selling to a buyer who already plans to fix it, selling as-is may be simpler. Get a written repair estimate first anyway, so you know what the dealer is deducting and can push back if the number is inflated.

If you took the insurance check and didn’t repair. You can still sell. Your insurer will treat those dents as already paid for, so they won’t be covered again on a later claim. A financed car may have required repair under the loan; check your agreement.

If it was totaled. Arizona’s salvage rules require a salvage certificate when a car is declared a total loss, and a branded title lowers resale value. This is general information, not legal advice. Whatever you do, Arizona law (A.R.S. § 20-468) lets you choose the repair shop.

ASKED ALONGSIDE THIS ONE

How much does hail damage lower trade-in value?+
It varies by car and dealer. Dealers usually deduct their cost to repair plus a margin, which is why a written repair estimate is the best way to check their number.
Should I fix hail damage before trading in?+
If you have a claim, usually yes: your insurer pays the repair instead of the damage coming off your trade-in. Without a claim, compare the repair price to the dealer’s deduction.
Can I trade in a car with an open hail claim?+
Talk to your insurer first. Once the car is traded, it isn’t yours to repair, and how the claim is settled can change.
Does paintless dent repair hurt resale?+
No. It keeps the factory paint, so there are no repaint lines or paint-thickness differences for an appraiser to find.
