WILL INSURANCE TOTAL MY CAR FOR HAIL IN ARIZONA?

Quick Answer

Usually not. Most hail claims are repaired, often with paintless dent repair, because the repair costs far less than the car is worth. Arizona has no fixed percentage that triggers a total loss. Under A.R.S. § 28-2091, a car becomes a salvage vehicle when the insurer or owner decides it’s uneconomical to repair, so each insurer applies its own math. Totals happen mostly on older or lower-value cars with heavy damage, especially when 2-inch stones cracked paint and glass on many panels. Unlike Texas, Arizona’s salvage definition doesn’t set hail apart, so a hail total can mean a salvage title. A written dent count shows how the repair compares to your car’s value before anyone decides.

The Longer Answer

THE MATH INSURERS RUN, AND HOW TO READ IT

Repair cost against value. An insurer compares what the repair will cost with your car’s actual cash value, the market value right before the storm, plus what it could get for the car as salvage. If repairing is uneconomical, it offers a total-loss settlement. Arizona’s statute doesn’t set a percentage, so the line differs by insurer.

Where hail repairs usually land. Our published prices put light hail on one or two panels at $750–$1,500, a typical full-vehicle claim at $5,000–$12,000, and severe damage with cracked paint or glass at $7,500–$15,000+. On a newer car or truck, even the severe range is usually well below value, which is why most hail claims get repaired.

Why the estimate matters. A first estimate written from photos can be too high or too low. A careful dent count under PDR lights, panel by panel, with paintless repair wherever the paint held, keeps the number honest. It also keeps a repairable car from being totaled on an inflated estimate.

If it is totaled. Arizona’s salvage rules mean the insurer applies for a salvage certificate after it takes the title. If you want to keep the car, you can usually ask for that; the insurer deducts the salvage value from your settlement, and you have to follow the salvage-title rules in § 28-2091 before the settlement is paid. A salvage title lowers resale value, so weigh that before you keep it. This is general information, not legal advice.

On a claim we repair, you choose the shop under A.R.S. § 20-468, and for qualifying claims from the October 20–21 storms we cover the first $1,000 of your deductible (above $1,000, case by case, and we do our best).

ASKED ALONGSIDE THIS ONE

What percentage of damage totals a car in Arizona?+
There isn’t a fixed percentage in Arizona law. Under A.R.S. § 28-2091, a car is a salvage vehicle when the insurer or owner considers it uneconomical to repair, so each insurer applies its own calculation.
Does a hail total give me a salvage title in Arizona?+
It can. Arizona’s salvage definition covers cars that are “otherwise damaged” to the point repair is uneconomical, and it doesn’t set hail apart the way Texas law does.
Can I keep my car if it’s totaled for hail?+
Usually, if you ask. The insurer deducts the salvage value from the settlement, and you have to follow Arizona’s salvage-title rules before the settlement is paid.
How do I keep a repairable car from being totaled?+
Get a careful written estimate: every dent counted under PDR lights, paintless repair wherever the paint held, and conventional repair only where it’s needed. An accurate number is the best protection.
