IS IT WORTH FIXING HAIL DAMAGE?

Quick Answer

Usually, yes, especially on a claim. Unrepaired hail damage typically costs you more at trade-in or sale than the repair costs you, and if you have comprehensive coverage, the repair can be $0 out of pocket on qualifying claims: your insurer pays it, and for the October 20–21, 2026 Phoenix storms we cover the first $1,000 of your deductible. Fixing it also keeps the damage from being mixed into a future storm claim. It may not be worth it on an older car with only a few small dents, a high deductible, and no plans to sell. In that case, paying cash for just the dents you notice, at $75–$200 per dent, can make sense.

The Longer Answer

FOUR REASONS TO FIX IT, AND ONE REASON NOT TO

1. Trade-in and resale. Dealers look at every panel under bright light, and hail dents are easy to spot that way. They price in the cost of fixing them, plus a margin, which usually takes more off your number than the repair would cost.

2. Future claims. Insurers keep track of damage they’ve already paid for or seen. If this storm’s dents are still on the car when the next hail hits, separating old damage from new can get complicated. A clean car makes the next claim simple.

3. Cracked paint. Where large stones cracked the clear coat, the bare metal underneath can start to corrode. That turns a paint repair into a bigger one if you wait.

4. The cost to you can be zero. On a qualifying claim, your insurer pays the repair. For qualifying claims from the October 20–21 storms, we cover the first $1,000 of your deductible (above $1,000, case by case, and we do our best). For many drivers that means $0 out of pocket.

The reason not to: if the car is older, the dents are few and small, your deductible is high and you plan to drive it until it dies, the math may favor leaving it alone, or paying cash for just a few dents. If you keep an insurance payment without repairing, the insurer will treat those dents as already paid for. A financed or leased car may also require repair under your loan or lease agreement.

Whatever you decide, Arizona law (A.R.S. § 20-468) lets you choose the shop.

ASKED ALONGSIDE THIS ONE

Does hail damage lower my car’s value?+
Yes. Dealers and buyers spot hail dents quickly under bright light and price in the cost of repairing them, usually with a margin on top.
Can I keep the insurance money and not fix the car?+
If you own the car outright, often yes. The insurer will treat those dents as already paid for on any future claim. A financed or leased car may require repair under your agreement.
Is it worth filing a claim for a few dents?+
Not always. If a written dent count comes in near or below your deductible, paying cash at $75–$200 per dent can be the better move, and the claim stays off your history.
Will fixing hail damage show on a vehicle history report?+
We don’t report repairs to history services. Insurers sometimes do report claims, so we can’t promise what shows up. Paintless repair keeps the factory paint, which is what inspectors check.
