The Standard

MEASURED, NOT GUESSED

Most hail entries in any city’s log are honest estimates — “quarter size,” “golf ball,” somebody’s palm and a memory. Allen’s record reads differently. Collin County’s amateur-radio spotter network works these streets with rulers, and the log shows it: “2.5 inch measured hail stone near Greenville and Exchange Parkway”; “1.5 inch hail measured near Exchange Parkway and US-75”; two inches measured at Country Club and West Lucas Road. Even the ring’s oldest big entry has a stopwatch in it — on April 11, 2016 a spotter at Malone and Main logged ping-pong-to-hen-egg hail and noted it fell for eight minutes, while another entry put two-inch stones at the Allen Event Center.

We bring that same standard to the other end of the process, because a hail claim is decided by whichever document is most precise. An adjuster’s photo-app estimate says “hail damage, moderate.” Our estimate says which panels, how many dents per panel, which ones sit over braces and need R&I access instead of straight PDR, and what the paint condition rules in or out — counted under raking light, photographed, and submitted in the carrier’s own format. Allen’s spotters measure stones; we measure damage. Between the two, there’s very little left for a claims desk to argue with.

THE EVENING THE RULERS CAME OUT

Allen’s marquee day runs down one street. At 6:48 PM on May 19, 2023, two-inch hail was falling at McDermott and Independence on the Plano seam. By 6:52 the log has two inches at Greenville and Bethany in Allen. At 6:57, a measured inch and a half near Exchange Parkway and US 75 — and, in the same minute, the entry that gives this page its spine: a golf-ball report that adds, plainly, “caused damage to window and car.” Three minutes later came the measured 2.50-inch stone at Greenville and Exchange Parkway, and by 7:05 the storm was measuring two inches over Lucas. Seventeen minutes, one corridor, five precise entries — the Greenville spine from Bethany to Exchange took the worst of it.

Stones from 1.5 to 2.5 inches are the transition class: big enough to crack windshields and break paint on the panels they hit square, shallow-denting everywhere else. Cars caught on that corridor that evening typically needed combination repair — PDR across the shallow field, conventional refinish where paint let go — and glass. If yours was one of them and the roof never got looked at under proper light, that check still costs nothing, and the date has a federal record behind it.

The Public Record

Each row is a National Weather Service local storm report logged in Allen or within five miles of the city center — a ring that carries Fairview, Lucas and Parker whole, plus the Plano seam south and the McKinney seam north. The usual point-report honesty applies in both directions: an unspotted street can be hit without an entry, and a pin near Lucas is not proof about a driveway off Bethany. What the log establishes is dates and sizes — the two things an adjuster can’t argue with.

One stone deserves its own honesty note: the ring’s 4.50-inch maximum — the largest report on any table we publish — is pinned near Alma Road and Collin McKinney Parkway, 2.8 miles from Allen’s center on the seam the two cities share. After a verified Collin County storm, the pop-up canopies bloom along the retail corridors — the Stacy Road strip, the 75 frontage, the Event Center lots — because that’s where ten thousand hailed cars drive past a “FREE DENT REMOVAL” banner. The irony on this page: a city whose hail record is famous for measurement gets pitched by crews whose estimates are famous for the opposite. Guessed dent counts, flat curb prices, warranties that expire when the tent folds.
