THE FORECASTERS’ BACKYARD

Every city page we publish leans on the National Weather Service’s storm-report log. North Richland Hills is the one place where the log leans back: the NWS Fort Worth forecast office — the building where every DFW storm report is received and archived — sits inside this ring, on the Haltom City side. So the record here includes entries no other table has: quarter-size hail “at the NWS office” at 1:28 AM in April 2017; an official “1.5 inch hail at NWS office in Fort Worth” at 4:15 AM on April 28, 2020; a 2018 entry filed simply “at the WFO.” When the April 2026 outbreak’s overnight round crossed the ring, the first pin came from the office itself at 12:39 AM. NWS employees also logged hail at ordinary NRH corners — Davis Boulevard and North Tarrant Parkway, Western Center and I-35 — on their way through the same storms as everyone else.

What that means for a car owner is simple: this ring’s dates are unimpeachable. A hail claim lives or dies on its date of loss, and NRH damage can be matched against entries timestamped to the minute by the agency insurers themselves treat as the reference. The rest of the file is our job — a dent map counted under raking light and matched to one of those dates — and between the two, an adjuster has nothing left to question but the repair plan.

2026, By The Record

ALREADY TWICE THIS YEAR

Most of our city tables are quiet in 2026. This one isn’t. In the small hours of April 26, 2026 — the overnight finale of the metro’s four-day April outbreak — quarter-size hail moved across the ring from 12:39 to 12:56 AM, pinned first at the NWS office, then west of Richland Hills, then southeast of it. That timing matters for paperwork: the storm your family watched on Saturday evening did its hail work here after midnight, so the honest date of loss is April 26, not April 25 — a one-day slip that stalls claims, and exactly the trap our outbreak page documents. Then on May 25, 2026 at 3:52 PM, a quarter-size round landed a tenth of a mile from the center of North Richland Hills — broad daylight, middle of town.

Quarter-size is the threshold class: it dents hoods, roofs and deck lids on steel — shallow, paint-safe, ideal PDR work — and marks aluminum truck panels at even smaller sizes. A car that sat outside in NRH this spring has met hail twice; five quiet minutes in low morning light down the hood and roof settles whether it left anything behind, and a texted photo settles the rest for free.

Each row is a National Weather Service local storm report logged in North Richland Hills or within five miles of the city center — a ring holding Watauga, Richland Hills and Haltom City’s north side whole, with the Hurst, Bedford, Colleyville and Keller seams at its edges. Point reports mark where a witness stood, nothing more: an unlogged street can still have been hit, and a Hurst pin doesn’t convict a Rufe Snow driveway. Dates and sizes are what the log settles — here, often by the agency’s own staff.

The calendar deserves a second look: this table holds a December day and an August day around the usual spring core — and December hail is genuinely rare, with only four December hail days logged in the core counties in the whole eleven-year record. The Insurance Side

AN NRH HAIL CLAIM, ON THE RECORD

Start from the protections. Hail is a comprehensive claim — fault-free, off your driving record. The shop is your call under Tex. Ins. Code §1952.301, however warmly the claims line mentions its network. And 28 TAC §5.7016 bars a carrier from nonrenewing a personal auto policy solely over weather claims. What stays honest to say: no rule freezes premiums, and the post-storm increases most northeast Tarrant drivers feel are territory filings that land ZIP-wide, claim or no claim — the rates guide shows which levers are real.

Then the work. You open the claim — a ten-minute job with our step-by-step guide — and hand us the number. Keep two of them loaded. A contract signed at your home can be canceled until midnight of the third business day — Texas law, no apology needed. And a deductible “taken care of” by padding the insurance estimate is fraud under Tex. Penal Code §35.02, prosecuted under the name on the policy — yours.
