THE EVENING THE MID-CITIES CORE TOOK ITS BIGGEST STONES

Memorial Day evening, 2024. Across forty-one minutes the ring filed more than thirty reports, and the sizes climbed relentlessly: quarters through Bedford and Hurst from 7:06, golf balls in Hurst at 7:08, a delayed emergency-management entry of “around 2 inch hail in the Morrisdale neighborhood,” half-dollars near Wilshire Elementary School, hen-egg stones at 7:22 and again southwest of Bedford at 7:29 — and at 7:26 PM, the ring’s all-time entry: a 2.75-inch baseball two miles southeast of Hurst, with a twin logged toward Euless one minute later. The same hour reached Colleyville to the north; that page tells it from the center of its own ring.

Stones that size crack glass, crease roof rails and split clear coat — and Memorial Day timing meant thousands of cars sat in driveways and apartment lots instead of office garages. A year on, we still see that evening’s signature arriving on trade-ins: deep, paint-cracked craters an appraiser prices ruthlessly and a comprehensive claim would have covered entirely.
